Classical ballet technique is based on a position of the legs called the turnout. This is the first of five positions. This is the second, third, fourth, and fifth. <NP> The plie, or bending of the legs, is the springboard for all movements. This pirouette from fourth position incorporates a plie. <NP> Pointe work, or dancing on the toes, is a special technique for women, and requires great strength in the feet and ankles. <NP> Ballet uses these, and numerous other positions and movements, in a seemingly endless variety of combinations.
